Exciting News

After 28 years of running out of portable buildings, it was with much excitement that the school received the news this year that it would be funded to construct a new, $2.5M “LOTE Centre of Excellence” under the government’s Building the Education Revolution (B.E.R.) funding. Stay tuned for future updates, as the building commences in Jan/Feb 2010!

This page has downloadable pdf files and links, including the article "common fallacies about multilingualism and second language acquisition" which is the work of Melbourne University with Bayswater South as one of the schools studied over many years.

The program builds on the students’ prior knowledge, skills and experiences and challenges them to extend their development.

Design, Creativity and Technology

1

The Design, Creativity and Technology Program at Bayswater South P.S. aims to develop the students’ problem-solving skills through the technological processes of investigating, designing, producing and testing, analysing and evaluating.

Design and Technology activities are usually integrated into the students’ Art and SOSE topics.

Science

2At Bayswater South Primary School we take pride in delivering a quality Science Program as part of the German Immersion Program. We have a well equipped Science Room that features colourful posters, models, networked computers, laboratory equipment, two blue-tongue lizards, three bearded dragons, a children’s python (Leopatra), two budgies (Bertie and Bertha), green tree frogs, plants, reference books, children’s work and of course Samuel the life-size Skeleton! We also have a large chicken coop and our friendly chooks are given access to the yard during the day. Our Sustainability Program ensures that the eggs are used in cooking, the scraps are fed back to the chooks or put in the compost bin, and the vegie garden is fertilised from the chook manure!

All the science disciplines, as set out by the VELS (Victorian 3Essential Learning Standards) documents are covered, and experimentation is a key feature of the program. Students become adept at making predictions and observing outcomes.

They learn that information can be presented in a variety of ways ranging from labelled illustrations to tables of results and graphs. All students in Years 5 and 6 participate in the University of New South Wales Science Competition which is held each year.

4Students at Bayswater South Primary School have consistently outperformed similar schools in this test (shown over the last 11 years), even though the test is in English and the students are instructed in the German language.
