BILINGUAL PROGRAM- SUNDAY FORUM
Our Bilingual Program was highlighted recently when I was asked to be part of a Bilingual Forum in Carlton. I reminded those present of the advantages of being in a bilingual school. As you all know, bilingual learning encourages deep thinking, it develops problem solving skills and assists cognitive development. At BSPS we have a bilingual German immersion program which delivers Science, Technology, General Studies, Music and Visual Arts through the medium of German. Our program at BSPS has been running for 28 years and is underpinned by extensive research, exemplary methodology, experience and commitment. Our students learn science which is taught in German, so our students learn two things at once. This is very exciting and gives their brains a really good work out. Children have an opportunity to acquire language and a subject knowledge as well as thinking and problem solving skills, which will stand them in good stead throughout their lives. I feel very proud of our bilingual program at Bayswater South.
LEAVE FOR MS KATE WILLIAMS
I would like to wish Ms Kate Williams a happy holiday as she takes leave over the next few weeks. And I would like to welcome to Ms. Debbie Anderson who will be taking Kate‟s class. Kate will return to BSPS on November 23.
TRANSITION PROGRAM
Our Prep Transition Program takes place on Thursday 29th October. We are looking forward to all our 2010 preps attending on the day. Could all parents who are interested in having their children enrolled please do so immediately as classes are now almost full..
I would like to thank Mrs Vicki Ransom for her coordination of the kinder/ prep transition program and to Mrs Roz Ludgater for her work in assisting in this program.
CYBER BULLYING
Multimedia technology has created new domains in which young people can learn and interact. Unfortunately some people use this technology to bully others by sending them unwanted or threatening messages or spreading rumours. I would like to raise the awareness of our school community about cyber bullying. The seriousness of cyber bullying has to be exposed to parents and students. It is unacceptable and has a major impact on those being bullied. Parents should monitor their children‟s emails and inform the school if a child is being cyber bullied or if a child is aware of another student is being cyber bullied. Children should be made aware how important it is that they do not divulge their passwords to anyone.
HEIDI VICTORA WRITING AWARDS
Mrs. Heidi Victoria, The Local Member for Bayswater will present awards for excellent writing at assembly on Friday. We applaud this initiative from Mrs. Victoria as it has assisted students with their writing skills.
BASKETBALL EFFORTS AT BSPS
Congratulations to our 13 students who were involved in Basketball Hoop Time on Wednesday at The Dandenong Stadium. These students are part of The Senior Basketball Team and have won their way through to District Finals and on to The Regional Finals. This is an outstanding effort and reflects the excellent skills these students display in basketball. Congratulations to all students involved.
Our girls basketball team have one more game today at Knox Stadium as part of VPSSA Zone Finals. We wish these students all the best and want to congratulate to them for their great efforts. Sincere thanks to Mr H for his excellent work in training our students.
VIST TO TEMPLER HOME FOR THE AGED
Throughout 2009, Frau McCluskey has organised Years 5 and 6 students to visit the residents of the Tabulam and Templer Home for the Aged (TTTHA) in order to practice their speaking and listening skills.. This has been a most rewarding program for the residents and the students. Next Monday students will attend TTHA to listen to a special guest speaker, Mr M Herman who will talk about the history of the Temple Society in Australia. Some of the residents will share their stories of migration with the children. This is part of our program to work to build links with the community.
Thank you to Frau M McCluskey for her work in organising this valuable activity.
STUDENT ENGAGEMENT POLICY
The Student Engagement Policy is a school document that every Victorian Government School will need to have in place by the beginning of the 2010 school year. The Student Engagement Policy will focus on prevention and early intervention for students who are experiencing behavioural or attendance related issues. The Student Engagement Policy is unique
to each school and will set out the rights, responsibilities and shared expectations of everyone in a school community including students, parents or carers, teachers and other school staff. Schools need to ensure parents or carers have the chance to provide input into the development of this policy ensuring hopefully, a sense of ownership over the policy. All parents or carers are encouraged to become involved in the development of Bayswater South Primary School‟s Student Engagement Policy. I invite all interested parents or carers to attend a meeting on Monday, 26th October at 9.15a.m. This meeting will be held in the hall. Please RSVP to the office if you are able to attend this important meeting.
SUNSMART POLICY –ALL CHILDREN MUST WEAR HATS
The Sunsmart Policy states that all children must wear a school hat at snack and at lunchtimes. If children do not wear their hat at these times then they must sit in the shaded designated area. Student without a hat are not allowed to play at lunch or recess. Parents, please ensure your child has a school hat during Terms 1 and 4.
